Bernese Mountain Dogs

The Bernese Mountain Dog was first brought into Switzerland over 2000 years ago to an area called Berne. There, his name is Berner Sennenhund. This big sweet dog was originally a draft dog, but was also used for helping with sheep and cattle drives. Of the four types of Swiss mountain dogs, only the Bernese Mountain Dog has the long silky coat.

Although sometimes shy, he loves children and is exceptionally faithful to his owner making them wonderful helper dogs for the disabled. Their thick coat encourages a love of cool weather.

This tri-color dog is mainly black with rust over his eyes, cheeks, on the sides of the chest, on the legs and under the tail. He always has a white mark in the shape of a cross on his chest. Standing height at the shoulder ranges from 22.5 to 27.5 inches. The breed standards suggest a weight of 80 to 100 pounds.

Parent Stock

Several of our Berners were imported from Poland. Their Polish Kennel Club registrations have been transferred into the United Kennel Club (UKC). Our Bernese are easy going, loving and seemingly enjoy meeting prospective buyers who come to view their puppies. They just haven't figured out that they have grown a little too large to be lap dogs and would probably fit on the floor by our feet better than on the couch beside us. Bernese Mountain Dogs grow rapidly so they are ready to move to their new homes at about 8-9 weeks of age and will weigh almost 15 pounds. Proper feeding with a high quality food formulated for large breed dogs is a must. All puppies are current on wormings and vaccinations. They each have an AVID microchip inserted between the shoulder blades for positive identification. You will find that there is no baby quite like a Bernese baby!
